Market Research Methodology

Market analysis and technology forecasting are complex tasks. Any predictions of the shape and trends of technology and economic movement start from the notion that the germ of what will be important tomorrow is present, although smaller or larger or in a different form, in our environment today. However, taking as a basis for a prediction the assumptions of current, conventional belief creates a set of preconceived notions that can lead to serious mistakes. ElectroniCast, instead, looks to the basic driving forces.

Information Base

During the market research process, ElectroniCast analysts performed interviews with authoritative and representative individuals in the LED and lighting industry, plus – R&D and factory/manufacturing, from the standpoint of both suppliers and users of LED and lighting illumination products. The interviews were conducted principally with:

·        Architectural lighting Designers/Installers concerns, Engineers, marketing personnel and management at manufacturers of LED lighting and related equipment, as well as other lighting technologies.

·        Design group leaders, engineers, marketing personnel and market planners at major users and potential users of LEDs and lighting

·        Other industry experts, including those focused on standards activities, trade associations, government and investments.

The interviews covered issues of technology, R&D support, pricing, contract size, reliability, documentation, installation/maintenance crafts, standards, supplier competition and other topics.

Bottom-up Methodology     ElectroniCast forecasts, as illustrated in the forecast data structure, are developed initially at the lowest detail level, then summed to successively higher levels. The background market research study focuses on the amount of each type of product used in each application in the base year (2017), and the prices paid at the first transaction from the manufacturer. This forms the base year data.

ElectroniCast analysts then forecast the growth rates in component quantity use in each application, along with price trends, based on competitive, economic and technology forecast trends, and apply these to derive long term forecasts at the lowest application levels. The usage growth rate forecasts depend heavily on analysis of overall end user trends toward equipment usage and economic payback.

Illumination: Fibre optic lighting in signs and displays

By Stephen Montgomery

Fibre optics may be best-known to the public for their broad use in residential Internet and other telecommunications services, as they can transmit more data across longer distances than copper- or wire-based cabling. They are also increasingly being implemented for lighting applications, however, including sign and display illumination.

An optical fibre is a thin and flexible tube, made of either glass or plastic, that can carry light from one end to the other. It may be installed inside a cable jacket or externally from a cable (i.e. ‘individually’).

Fibre optic lighting has proven practical for a wide range of industrial, automotive, military, aerospace, medical and scientific uses, but has also found its way into store display cases, swimming pools and spas, landscaping, offices, casinos, holiday decorations, toys and consumer products. Indeed, research shows the overall value of the worldwide market for fibre optic lighting grew to US$312 million in 2016.

While the use of fibre optics in signage is still in its infancy, this could change quickly. The process of assembling, testing and manufacturing fibre optic lighting products already allows for mass production capabilities. Over the next few years, the average prices of these products will be driven lower by these production efficiencies, as well as by quality controls, higher yields, greater competition (in terms of both markets and technologies), improvements in sales, marketing and distribution and other factors. As such, the technology will move on from the ‘development’ and ‘introduction’ stages in the sign industry and into the ‘growth’ stage of its product life cycle (PLC).

LG Innotek Unveils the World’s First ‘100mW’ UV-C LED

LG Innotek today announced that the company has developed the world’s first 100mW (mill watts) UV-C LED. This development is 2 years ahead of the industry forecast that predicted its development would be successful by 2020.

UV-C LED is a product that emits ultraviolet light with short wavelengths ranging between 200 – 280 nanometers (nm), and is also called Deep UV. It is used in sterilizing and hardening devices with its ability to destroy bacterial DNA and cause chemical reactions with special materials. LG Innotek’s product emits UV in the range of 278nm.

UV-C LED can produce more powerful sterilizing effects with higher light output, but it is very difficult to obtain a stable quality in products with it due to heat. The companies that have led the market have also planned to launch the 100mW UV-C LED by 2020.

LG Innotek has overcome the technological limit by applying the epitaxial structure and the vertical chip technology that maximize light extraction. The ultraviolet output is raised and the heat is discharged effectively, ensuring stable quality reliability. This one 100mW UV-C LED can emit strong sterilization ultraviolet light for more than 10,000 hours.

With this development of the product having a light output of 100mW, LG Innotek has now become capable of expanding its UV-C LED application field. As the product can rapidly sterilize flowing water and even air, it can be used in a wide array of household appliances from water purifiers and air purifiers to air conditioning systems for buildings and automobiles as well as water treatment devices.

Conventional UV-C LEDs with a light output level of 1~2mW are mostly used for portable sterilizers or small household appliances. Due to their weak UV-C power, their scope of application is limited.

As the company has discussed development of a variety of products using UV-C LED with a number of other global companies and the demand for high-output LEDs continues to grow, it is expected that the demand for 100mW UV-C LEDs will also increase rapidly.

LG Innotek intends to accelerate its securing of the UV LED market leadership. In particular, the company has confidence in hitting the market with its unrivaled technology in the UV-C field that can offer excellent sterilization and curing performance.

The company’s quality competitiveness has been proven by its launching of innovative products such as the LED module for sterilizing water purifier faucet aerator and the UV LED sterilizer for escalator handrails one step ahead of its rivaling Japanese companies.

A representative of LG Innotek said, “We will continue to widen the technological gap with our competitors and introduce innovative products that our customers desire to stay as the leader of the market.”
