Asia Pacific Market Forecast – LED-Based Lamps

According to ElectroniCast, the number of LED lamps used in the Asia Pacific region is forecast to reach 1.66 billion (units) in the year 2015, representing an average annual growth rate of 115.3 percent (2010-2015).

ElectroniCast Consultants, a leading market & technology forecast consultancy, today announced their 5-year market forecast of the Asia Pacific consumption of light emitting diode (LED) lamps in solid-state lighting (SSL) General Lighting applications.

According to the ElectroniCast study  – In 2011, the street lighting category dominates the product market share, in terms of consumption value, in the Asia Pacific region.  However, ElectroniCast points out that there is a big difference in product-category market share from the value data ($ million) versus the volume (quantity/number of units) data, especially for the Streetlight category.  This is because there is such a huge difference in the relative (higher) pricing for a streetlight lamp compared to the lower pricing for the other lamp types.  For example, in terms of volume (quantity/number of lamps), the street lighting category dominates the product market share with less than 10 percent of the total volume of LED-based lamps use in the Asia Pacific region in 2011.

It is important to note that some streetlight fixtures, which are installed on the top of the poles, may actually have more than one (1) lamp.  For example, the streetlight fixture may actually accommodate 2 or more lamps.  ElectroniCast expects that the average street lamp will increase in brightness output over the forecast period (2010-2015); therefore, fewer lamps per light pole (or fixture) will be required over time.  The data shown by ElectroniCast counts the lamps (not the fixture/s).

The new report from ElectroniCast also segments the market forecast data by three major End-User categories: Government, Commercial/Industrial, and Residential/Non-Specific.  Most of the streetlights fall-in the Government category; the Commercial/ Industrial group is especially strong in the PAR lamps, MR lamps and (near-term) General Service lamps (LED linear/tube lamps are also counted); the Residential category is forecast with relative strong use in the General Service/Decorative style of lamp types.

Volume/Quantity Market Forecast             The consumption value is determined by multiplying the number of units (volume) by the average selling price. The average selling prices are based on the price of the LED lamps at the initial factory level.

ElectroniCast estimates that 35.8 million LED lamps (consumer-level bulbs) were installed/used in Asia Pacific last year in 2010. The number of LED lamps is forecast to be nearly 1.66 billion (units) in the year 2015, representing an average annual growth rate of 115.3 percent (2010-2015).

Note: Market forecast data in this study report by ElectroniCast refers to consumption (use) for a particular calendar year; therefore, this data is not cumulative data. Market forecast data are provided in United States Dollars (US$).

Additionally, the new market research report, by ElectroniCast also provides the market data by the following regional segments:

·        Asia Pacific (Total)
o       The People’s Republic of China
o       Japan
o       Republic of Korea
o       Rest of Asia

Lower Power Bills with LED Lighting

Monday, 15 August 2011             Impress Media Australia has slashed more than $500 from its annual power bill by replacing 80 fluorescent globes and tubes with LED (Light-Emitting Diode) lighting at its office.

The lighting overhaul also eliminates the need to regularly clamber up and down stepladders to change light globes as LED lights are predicted to last for 50,000 hours each – that’s more than 24 years of 40-hour working weeks!

While LEDs have replaced incandescent and fluorescent bulbs for many uses, such as traffic lights, flashlights and reading lamps in recent, the availability of compact fluorescent bulbs and fittings increasingly make them the best long-term choice for commercial and even residential lighting.

Impress Media selected LED lighting specialist Steve Hay of Electrical Solutions and LED Lighting to review its existing lighting, relocate a number of existing downlights and replace existing fluorescent lighting with LEDs.

As an example, in one 6x4-metre office, Steve replaced two fluoro tubes and four fluoro globes with five 18-watt LED downlights. As well as reducing power consumption from about 160 watts per hour to just 90 watts –less power than a single 100-watt incandescent globe – it boosted the amount of light in the room by more than 50 per cent, from less than 300 lumens to about 450 lumens.

Impress Media managing director John Harris said the lower power costs would take about three years to pay back the investment. “What I’m most happy about is not having to change any more bulbs,” he explained.

Bruker: Advanced HB-LED Production Metrology

Bruker Introduces Dimension Edge PSS Atomic Force Microscope for Advanced HB-LED Production Metrology

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Aug 15, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Bruker today launched the Dimension Edge™ PSS Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), a production-environment AFM specifically tailored for patterned sapphire substrate (PSS) metrology in high brightness light-emitting diode (HB-LED) manufacturing.

The Dimension Edge PSS is an easy-to-operate AFM that delivers resolution far beyond traditional optical techniques while at the same time providing precise 3D profile information to control the most advanced PSS processes. The system performs automated measurement, data collection, data analysis and report generation on 2- to 6-inch wafers for production metrology applications, and offers a multitude of AFM capabilities essential for LED R&D. The Dimension Edge PSS comes with Bruker's exclusive AutoMET™ software package, which greatly improves manufacturing productivity by fully automating AFM data collection and analysis report generation to provide a PASS/FAIL output for technician operation.

"Driven by ever increasing performance and cost demands, HB-LED manufacturers are looking to PSS technology to deliver critical process improvements, and the Dimension Edge PSS is instrumental in controlling these advanced processes," said Mark R. Munch, Ph.D., President of the Bruker Nano Surfaces Division. "The Dimension Edge PSS provides rapid process feedback with its speed of measurement and unmatched precision and resolution."

"With the release of the Dimension Edge PSS, Bruker continues to demonstrate its commitment to superior AFM performance and usability for both researchers and production environments," added David V.
